I think yesterday’s Photo Hunt post showed that cats don’t need opposable thumbs to rule the world… or at least we don’t need ’em to open up doors. I found a bunch of videos on YouTube as proof. Here are my favorites — most of them are just mere seconds long!
This cat just casually lets himself into the room:
Here is one cat who not only lets himself out, but lets another cat in!
Admittedly, doors that open inwards are a little more difficult than doors that open outwards, but Gracie here proves it can be done:
Door handles are not even necessary, as Edward proves. Someone at my house is able to open the same type of doors, but I am not at liberty to divulge who.
The most challenging doors for us thumbless ones are those with round handles, but even they can be mastered. This video runs a little longer than the rest, but trust me, Neo gets that door open.
Our cats can not stand to be on the wrong side of a door. To them, the wrong side is always the side they are on. I think they just dislike closed doors.
Wow! I wishes I could do like those cats!!
I can open cupboard doors but the best doors has bad knobs on those and I can not do knobs.
It’s a good think Jake hasn’t figured out how to open the kitchen cabinets…yet…
His brother Gun-Hee knew how the elevator worked (http://abyaday.wordpress.com/2007/07/27/lolgun-hee/). He couldn’t reach the buttons, but he knew the buttons had something to do with making the elevator go and he would reach up and try to hit them. He also had a project going where he was trying to open the dishwasher. He knew how it worked, but he didn’t have the weight or the leverage to pull open the door. He tried to get Kylie to help him, once (http://abyaday.wordpress.com/2007/10/17/gun-hees-a-bad-influence/)…
Is there anything better than cat videos? I think not. Fabulous collection here, Sparkle! A couple new ones to me!
Thanks Sparkle!
Me showed them (the videos) to Kozmo and wes going to practice together!

I think Edward needs to figure out which cupboard has the kitteh treats in it before he wastes all that time and effort.
Sorry, Miss Sparkle, but we had to come back and comment. The main reason we talked about our mom’s shoes is because she is so tall, she has rarely bought shoes with heels before. But she just HAD to have these boots, and anytime she wears them, they kill her feet (not to mention she looks like a giraffe on rollerskates, she’s so uncoordinated). So for her to ONLY bring those boots out of town was stupid – not just stupid, REALLY stupid. But she’s like your human – searching for cute shoes without heels. She doesn’t have much luck. Then again, she’s never been accused of having good fashion sense, anyway. 😉
Clever cats! I used to open the bathroom door to drink from the bath tap, but mum leaves it open for me now.
Eric
That’s a cat for you! Never give up!
If a cat wants something….
I like slamming the bathroom sink doors early in the morning…
Those are cute videos! We just have to paw at a door and it gets magically opened for us. We’re a tad bit spoiled!
We got nuffin but time…we’ll figure out those doors!
Great movies. I can see I gave up too easily here at our house.
Cats just ROCK… they are so smart!!! I think Neo was amazing 🙂
We need to watch these videos more and take notes!
The Florida Furkids and Angel Sniffie
What clever cats – we never try to open doors as mum leaves the inside doors open for us and she says we’re not to be trusted with outside door keys!!
We anipals are so smart. M’s first cat could open drawers that had those old kind of hooks when the hook goes into a little eye. Well, Pepper learned dat pull out drawer was where the doggie food was kept, so he learned how to open the latch, pull out the heavy door and rip the bag to shreds, then share with his roommate – the dog. he he – M says she wasn’t too happy, but had to admit Pepper was pretty smart.
Those were fun to watch!! We can open the cupboard door..’specially the one where all all our food are…but we haven’t figured out how to open those cans yet…
Thanks for the instructional videos. I’ll get the boys working on their door-opening skills.
pawhugs,
Max
Those are some great lessons, I need to go practice!
Great clips! I love these smart cats and it was especially fun to watch Neo being so persistent.
YES!
Love these videos!
We are very smart!

Thanks for this Sparkle ! Lots of jobs
My door is pretty complicated. I used to open once. Since my human figured out how I opened it, they do dead locked !
Goes to show, when a cat is on a mission, all is possible. Little brother Wart is a mater at opening doors, but I have never seen him do it for another cat!
I’d like to be able to open the fridge. That’s where the ham lives.
Lol ! Reminds me of my very first cat, she opened all doors ! But when we moved into our house there were knobs instead of door handles and instead of opening the doors she meowed for hours or scratched with the result that we left all doors open ! She was a real (cute) terrorist !
Well its easy ta open cabinet doors. I do that.
But the others were amazin!
