Sweet Kitty Was Framed, Now on Death Row

August 18, 2010 By: Sparkle Cat28 Comments

This is Koko. She shouldn't be in this kill shelter.I was going to announce the winner to my contest today, but something has come up that’s more important: a life is at stake. Koko is the victim of cruelty and false accusations, and through no fault of her own, she has been left to die at Henry County Animal Control in Georgia, the same place that Arizona/ Freya was rescued from a few weeks ago. And like Freya, I found out about her from my human friend, Robin Olson of Covered in Cat Hair. If you click on the link, you will find out a lot about Koko’s dilemma, but Robin was so furious that there is quite a bit of profanity in her post. So if you have sensitive eyes, be warned!

I am angry too, but I will try to tell the story calmly. The humans Koko was living with stuffed her in a carrier and dumped her on the doorstep of a vet clinic — that was closed. In other words, this kitty was left in the summer heat for a whole day before she was discovered! And when she was found, the clinic called animal control and had her taken away. Inside the carrier, along with Koko were a series of notes. I will just show the first one; if you want to see the rest, you can go to Robin’s blog post. This note supposedly was written by Koko herself, but it is clearly a forgery!

Note forged in Koko's name.

There are a lot of clues to prove this letter was forged in Koko’s name, but the most important is that Betsy, the nice woman who tries to help kitties at Henry County Animal Control, reports that Koko’s litter box habits are impeccable! If Koko was having issues with her two feline roommates, the humans who dumped her apparently did not make much of an effort to solve the problem — other than getting rid of Koko in the cruelest way possible. This letter is dripping with phoniness.

The bottom line is that the humans who Koko originally lived with decided she was too much trouble and callously got rid of her. Now she is stuck in this high kill shelter, where ordinary brown tabby adults like her almost never get adopted. She mostly likely will be put to death, along with other innocent kitties whose only real issue was sharing a home with humans who did not understand the responsibility of pet ownership…

Unless you step up and help! There are donors who are willing to get Koko out — but only if there is a rescue or an adopter available. Robin can’t do it because she has nowhere for Koko to go. I know, however, that if we spread the word far enough, there is someone out there who can and will step forward to give Koko a new home! Can we please make another miracle happen for a kitty who was unfairly framed?

Below is the info for Koko and Henry County Animal Control — help her!

Seriously... can you sit back and let this kitty die?PLEASE REFER TO THIS ID# 8/16-3406 when contacting HCC&C.

We are very rescue friendly and are more than happy to work with any rescue group as long as the group has a valid Georgia Department of Agriculture license! Any rescue group, whether in or out of state, that takes pets from Georgia shelters, is required, by Georgia law, to have a rescue license issued by the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s Animal Protection Division. Having tax exempt status is not the same as a license. For more information on obtaining a license, please call (404) 656-4914.

Great news – Koko has been adopted! (And BTW, you cannot tell from the photos, but she is a polydactyl!)

OOH, I am SO mad about this!! If I could, I’d drive down there & take her myself! Unfortunately my landlord has threatened that poor Simon has put me (over) my maximum cat limit (I had the power of purr-suasion on my side to keep Simon!) Why can’t humans understand that when they adopt an animal – they are signing on FOR LIFE!!! ARGH!!

I amended my post to show the information you left in a comment about the Funds, etc.

    Praying for a miracle,
    Cory (Nico, Simon & JayJay)

We are having bad news overload today and mommy is a leaky mess. We’re very sad over Koko and are purraying that she gets the home she deserves after her family was so cruel to her. We also know we don’t like GA shelters – they are not kitty friendly it seems.

This stinks SO bad! I read the whole post on Robin’s blog and it’s so disgusting! I really love brown tabbies (KoKo looks exactly like my wonderful rainbow bridge cat, Henry) – and I so much wish we could adopt her – she is beautiful! We’re sending all our purrs and good thoughts for her.

I saw this last night at Robin’s blog and totally lost it – because she is dead on right. This is the reason that I wish I could start a cat sanctuary, to help cats like this. I wish I could take Koko but we have just not got the room – and I am so frustrated! I couldn’t even comment on Robin’s post because I was so upset, mad, crying, just pissed off. And you don’t even want to know my boyfriends reaction to the former owners – it was not a good one. I am going to link to your post on our blog – I hope it helps. I so wish I could take Koko.

We normally aren’t violent cats, but this story makes us want to go and find Koko’s former owners and scratch their eyes out!! How cruel! We are purring that someone will rescue sweet Koko from the shelter.

It is true, so many people don’t want to work at trying to rehab a kitty and sometimes they just don’t know where to look for help either. I, too, can’t believe the clinic just called the kill shelter! But, at least the previous home she was in left some background info on her instead of nothing, so this kitty has a chance at being helped. So many times, people just dump a cat at a shelter without giving any history of behavior issues etc and so the cat never has the chance at getting help.

I hope someone can help this kitty find it’s furrever home…

We will help spread the word. We do so hope she finds a loving home. We can’t believe the Vet called the kill shelter on her. Our vet wouldn’t have done that.

Our vet is the greatest. She would have checked the kitty out and then tried to find a home for her.

Poor Koko. So many people take on cats as pets and never bother to learn about their behaviour or go a few steps or even the extra mile to solve behaviour issues. The owners who dumped her are gutless cowards. I can only hope their remaining cats don’t follow the same fate as sweet Koko. We’ll share this on Facebook.

    Best of luck to Koko!
