Winging Cat Rescue showed my human the power of the internet to save lives. Run by a group of volunteers from different parts of the US, WCR focuses on saving cats on death row in several shelters in Georgia. Like much of the south, these animal control facilities have a very high kill rate and the majority of cats who wind up there never come out alive — unless a rescue group like WCR steps up to help.
The humans behind WCR discovered that if they let others know about the plight of these cats through social networking, they could fund rescue, local fostering and transport to no-kill shelters or sanctuaries. They were the first rescue to be able to do this successfully on a large scale — others tried and ran into problems because just a few short years ago (we’re talking 2006 here) nobody knew about or understood using virtual means to do rescue. Winging Cat Rescue has been the inspiration for a lot of groups and individuals who now stage rescues via Facebook, Twitter and by blogging. WCR is directly responsible for saving over a couple thousand cats’ lives, and indirectly responsible for saving a few thousand more by forging new territory on the internet.
WCR also promotes spaying and neutering (the lack of which is the biggest reason so many cats wind up in kill shelters). With the help of their donors, they offer discount spay and neuter vouchers to Georgia adoptees. They even have a medical fund that helps vaccinate the cats that come into these animal control facilities, thus keeping disease from spreading throughout the population.
This is the reason I chose Winging Cat Rescue as my donation focus for my book launch party, and why I have a widget up for them for the month of October. The money donated through the widget to your right goes directly to Winging Cat Rescue. As the humans of WCR say, no amount is too small — even if you can only donate a few dollars, it helps because it will add up! Seriously, if you can skip your morning latte or donut and coffee, you can help fund a cat’s rescue! That’s something to think about… and act on!
Thank you for sharing Sparkle. It is great to hear about amazing organisations like WCR.
Sparkle, you are a good girl for supporting such a great group of people making a big difference for kitties. Now if we could just shut down the kill facilities (they are NOT shelters).
