Serving Military Pets

May 31, 2010 By: Sparkle Cat23 Comments

Don't leave our soldiers worrying about their pets! While we are honoring fallen military today, we should also remember an issue that animal lovers on active duty must deal with: how to take care of their pets when they are deployed. Back in the days of Desert Storm, there was no contingency plan for pet parents who were called to serve, and many of them had to give up their cats and dogs to shelters. A depressing amount of these pets were euthanized while their humans were serving their country. Fortunately, things are different today, although not everyone is aware of the options. That is why I am making this post today. I hope you spread the word that there are groups that will help find fosters for pets of military personnel. Here are some of them:

NetPet.org’s MilitaryPetsFOSTER Project©
They will help place any pet — cat, dog, bird, horse, etc. — belonging to military personnel. They are also recognized by the US Department of Defense as their Pet Assistance Provider.

NetPets.Org's MilitaryPetsFOSTER Project

Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pet
In addition to helping find foster homes for pets of deployed soldiers, this organization also helps emergency cases, when a soldier or veteran is under financial hardship and risks having to give up their pet.

Operation Noble Foster
This one is my favorite because they specialize in cat fostering!

Help our military have their cat to come home to!

Please visit these sites. Consider becoming a foster. Donate if you can. And make sure you share information about these groups with everyone you know! No one should ever have to relinquish their pet to a shelter because their country needs them.

These are great organizations! Thanks for the information. Fighting a war is enough to worry about, you shouldn’t have to worry about your pet, too.

That is a wonderful post about all those places. It is sad when the people serving our country have to give up their animals. We sure are glad to know that maybe they can put their animals.
    Have a super day.

Thankyou, Sparkle. It is so important that people know there are options. We are lucky when our dad is deployed, because we’ve got mum here. Some of dad’s friends have really had to struggle to get their animals a place to stay, and then worry about them when they are away. It’s not fair.

What wonderful organizations! Our cousin Wafer came and stayed with family here while his daddy was in Iraq but I’m sure there are many pets without family to stay with. . . we’re going to see if Momma will sign up as a foster mom!

A few years ago, we fostered a sweet little girl kitty named Mila through Operation Noble Foster. It was a great experience and her Daddy was very happy to know his little girl was taken care of. Since his return, we’ve remained friends.

Oh, that’s wonderful that there are volunteer organizations to help foster! I wonder if there is something similar here in Canada….

    Enjoy your holiday Monday!
