Yesterday on Catster, there was an interesting story by associate editor Keith Bowers about how he considers his cat Thomas to be his friend. And while I appreciated the sentiment, I had to wonder about Thomas… does he relate to Keith as some sort of buddy-buddy equal? Or does he view their relationship differently — maybe considering Keith his valet or wingman? Because the bare, naked truth is that we cats look at humans way differently than how they look at us… and the playing field is not level. It is so un-level, in fact, that I think nature had to handicap us by making us small in stature just so that humans would not feel so completely outpaced.
So I suppose that some of us kitties consider our humans our friends — but most likely, the clueless friend who follows your lead and has to look to you to know what is cool. Others see their humans as some combination of butler, maid and cook. In my case, my human is my assistant, toiling away with no hope of advancement — after all, there is no way she can be me, right? No matter how you look at it, when it comes to our relationships with our humans, we kitties have the upper paw.
So fellow felines, how would you define your relationship with your human? I’ve created a poll below for you — and of course, you are welcome to elaborate in the comments.

We would say our human is *all of the above* and then some: a member of our clowder, our faithful servant, our protector, our cleaner, our source of entertainment…oh, we could go on and on!

My human is my Mom… she takes care of me in every way and that includes non-stop cuddles.
