Before Binga says anything, I want to let you know that I don’t necessarily approve of or endorse any of her statements. Okay, I will let her speak now.
If you look all over the internet, you will find lots of articles on how to tell if a cat loves you. Well, they don’t apply to torties, so they might as well all be lies! To keep you from being misinformed any longer, I will let you know now how to tell you if a tortie loves you. This is more important, and truer, than any of the other stories. So don’t believe everything you see on the internet!
Since the great majority of torties are female, I shall use the pronoun “she.” Especially since I am a “she” anyhow, and that’s all that matters.
How to Tell if a Tortie Loves You
- She bites you! The harder she bites you, the more she loves you. Unless you are doing something like trying to clip her nails or stopping her from doing something she wants to do. Then if she bites you, it means she hates you. But don’t worry. She will only hate you for a few minutes. Probably.
- She purrs really loudly for you! Or sometimes it means she just wants something out of you. But don’t worry, torties never ask for things from someone they don’t love! Even if they change their minds and don’t love you later on.
- She sits on your lap and gets mad when you try to push her off. If she doesn’t get mad, then she probably doesn’t love you. If she gets really mad and refuses to leave, then she really loves you a lot!
- She whaps you when you misbehave! If she loves you, she will only leave her claws out a little bit. Unless you really misbehave badly — then she will use full claws. In case you are wondering, misbehaving means doing anything that does not involve the tortie, or doesn’t put the tortie first!
- She tears around the house and breaks things! That means you are ignoring her and she wants attention. Torties only want attention from people they love. Or failing that, they will take attention from anybody. But torties will break the things belonging to people they love first!
- She rolls on her back and presents her tummy to you! Yes, chances are she will shred your hand if you try to touch her tummy, but if she does, you deserved it because you should have known you weren’t supposed to do that!
- She follows you all over the house or apartment and won’t leave you alone! Except if it is dinnertime, then it means she is hungry and wants to make sure you don’t forget to feed her! But it still means she loves you because torties always love the human who is holding the food bowl!
All of this makes total sense, and I am surprised I even have to say any of it!

My girl is a Japanese bobtail tortie and she must really love me if I take the trash out to the porch she will start calling for me and sits in the doorway waiting for me constantly calling for me until I’m back inside then she acts like I’ve been gone all day and yells at me and pushes her entire body against my hand or whatever she can touch on me and I have to love on her until she decides that I can stop and if I try to stop she swats at me and follows me until she knows I’m not going back out soni have to take my shoes off and sit down to reassure her that I’m not leaving and she follows me around the house unless she’s sleeping and prefers to sleep beside my leg with my hand on her and prefers a soft rub from her chest down her belly and on the inside of her back legs and she totally trusts me to do anything to her as long as I’m talking to her and using a soft touch. Although she loves attention from almost anyone, I’m the only one allowed to come near her tail and if anyone else touches her tail she never lets them touch her again and if their hand comes within her reach she will swat them with her claws fully out. She is 100% the best fur baby I’ve ever had in my 54 years on this earth!!!!!
I have a Tortie and man these are right on the head. She puts very loudly for me not so much for my partner.
My Buka is an angel. When she bites it turns into grooming me quickly. SHe plays fetch and loves to cuddle.. She loves attention and gives it out as much as I give it to her
My tortie. Lucy, is sweet, gentle and loving…to me only! She rarely allow anyone else to see her … let alone, touch her! she does get along well with her housemate, a beautiful, big Bombay. He is our favorite “ person”! ⬛
I just adopted one. She’s so smart and she loves the two dogs. My 3 year old Maltese and her have ufc all the time. She likes my oldest dog more. She sleeps with him and cuddles too. She is a tiny thing. I took her to get her check up and she doesn’t like needles. When I took her for her shots they said next time bring towels. She is a wild woman.
We were told our rescue, Tina, was a biter at the shelter. We couldn’t resist that cute Tortie face! we’re still working on the biting after 6 months. She is almost 3 yrs old. We’re hoping as she gets older she will bite less. She is very smart but doesn’t want to sit on our laps. Thank you for this article as all the information, online, about biting doesn’t pertain to her …… like distract her with a toy…no. Please tell me that this biting will get better with work! We are retired so we have lots of times to try to teach her.
My little tortie ia a runt! Her Siamese really comes out. She loves to fetch, she is so smart. She will never get big. I worried about her weight but the vet says she is perfect. She has so much energy, she bites and scratches but loves to cuddle in a little ball around my neck at night, loves to give me kisses, want to take food right out of my mouth. No cuddling during the dayn.so many Siamese traits from momma, but can she pure loud! She is my independentp beauty. Her brother
Is growing so big and. Is a pure, black beauty, he lives upstairs with my sister. They are 7 months old now.o9
My Mila
Is the best cat in the world, this is her third home. She was really affraid to come out from under the bed at first. Then she came out regularly when my middle son and I would come around. I read some where that cats really enjoy when you sing there name to them. I started doing this, and all the traits of the tortie really came to the surface. I really love my cat, as a man. I never saw myself as a cat person. But if I may. My Mila saved me, I was having a hard time. As I type this, she is a sleep on my back. I love you Mila……
My Torie loves attention.
But I wish she would stop biting me.
She loves to held. And always pawing for more attention.
She jealous if the other cat gets more attention.
But she wonderful kitty.
My tortie gets upset when I gently pick her up and I can’t even pet her but when I do it lasts for a few seconds before she goes back to bunny kicking my arm. Then if I pull my hand away she pulls my hand back only to bite hard I mean she bites me until there are teeth marks in my hand or fingers. She loves my grandma. She will let her scratch her back and she jumps onto her lap but she’s treats me and my mom like chopped liver.
Mine does that tooo, omg I though that. She was hateful but seems to be part of her personality ♥️
Everything. You said is absolutely true
Oh! But Madama Cee Cee NEVER broke anything except my heart when she left this world!!!
She purred non stop — She had a wry little smile on her face, she KVETCHED (“Meh! Meeehhhhh!”) instead of meowing and she purred non stop. As for the Belly — no………!!! Off Limits!!!!!
Oh my gosh,
What did get myself into lol?!? Everything read my tortie loves to torture me sometimes. She honestly the coolest most meaningful animal human relationship. She moody turns on me but I get it all now. Have to just be 100% passive of her this type cat teaches you life skills for society. So, amped to finally figure out how to train her and make thing happy.
My tortie Charlotte does all these things except the sitting on laps. She’s fierce, feisty, and courageous!! She shows me the most love as I am the one who holds the feeding bowl. Shes such a jealous cat, shes been the only pet since I rescued her. I’m bringing another kitty in our home for her to play with, fingers crossed she doesn’t hate her!
My litte Alley loves to claw, but just for fun! (I hope!)
Makes purrfect sense!
My sweet little “Springsteen” says that this is all true but in a milder sense for muted torties like herself.
