Are you wondering what International Cat Day is? It used to also be called World Cat Day, with its origins and meaning kind of mysterious and vague. Fortunately, the custodianship of the holiday was acquired just this year by a non-profit group called International Cat Care. They set up a website and brought some sense and organization to this day.
Now we can celebrate International Cat Day by doing things to make cats happy. That’s the theme of today, as set up by International Cat Care. And it includes the fact that cats are all different, and different things make different cats happy.
So what makes your cat happy? Playtime with a favorite toy? A good meal and a nap in the sun? Wearing a dress and having people look at them? Oh wait, the latter one is just me. I don’t think that makes many other cats happy!
But seriously, each cat is totally unique. And some cats are happy not having any human contact whatsoever. And today is a day to respect and honor that. So if you live with a shy or semi-feral cat, or if you work with community cats, today just let them be themselves. If you live with a happy, friendly cat, then spend time with him.
Today you are encouraged to learn a little more about your cat, and what makes him happy. Really take note of ways in which you can enrich your cat’s life. Would she enjoy more vertical space? Would he enjoy learning a few tricks, or being leash trained? The fuller a cat’s life is, the happier and more well adjusted she is.
If you are active on social media, join the #happycat challenge! Take a photo of your cat at her most content, and post it with the hashtags #happycat and #international cat day, and tag @iCatCare. Unless your cat doesn’t like being photographed. Then of course, you can skip this challenge.

We are still teaching mom the many wonders of cats, MOL. Whoever said cats are solitary animals clearly was not owned by a cat. We love to talk to our pawrents and play with them. We all do these things in various different ways and at different times. We are a demanding bunch to say the least, well, most of us, MOL. But we do communicate with them…all the time. I totally forgot about this day…and I even forgot about the CWA awards…addled and tired brain cells…I was ‘on-call’ Saturday, so I think that was part of the issue of forgetting.

That is such good advice Summer, Mom says all 4 of us cats are different. Yin and Scylla want to be near Mom 24/7 they are happiest when they are in her way. Me (Chimera) and Yang like to go exploring and only check in for quick pets now and then. Lucidly for us she respects our different personalities.
