On Earth Day, April 22, humans who are concerned about the condition of their home — planet Earth — will be doing something positive for the environment. Humans are outnumbered by many other types of creatures, but they are the ones whose actions impact the earth the most, and they need to be mindful of how they live. But Earth Day does not have to be for humans only. Cats can also participate! Here are some of my suggestions on what you can do as kitties to make your life a little greener — today and in the future:
- Bug Recycling: Did you finally kill that bug completely dead, or did you just happen on one that isn’t moving? Don’t let that stop you from playing with it! A dead bug can be as fun as a live one — you just need a slick surface to bat it around. Use hardwood floors, or the kitchen floor. Even better, take it to an empty bathtub for a fun game of Dead Bug Hockey! Bugs can be even better the second time around.
- Cardboard Box Recycling: Make sure your humans know that every box that arrives in your home, no matter how big or how small, must be recycled as a cat toy and napping area. This is easy enough to do — just jump into it the box the moment it is emptied and don’t leave.
- Paper Bag Recycling: Take the same measures as above, but make sure your humans cut through the handles or remove them completely so your neck doesn’t get caught in them. This is especially nice if your human shops at designer stores — you will be the most fashionable kitty in your neighborhood, and you are saving the planet at the same time!
- Recycle Cat Food Cans: Many humans won’t do this because they think it’s icky to rinse out the can — don’t let your human get away with this excuse! You can help by dragging the cans out of the trash and licking them as clean as you possibly can. Then most of the work will already be done — and you will have had a little treat too! My human does not like this idea because she worries that kitties will hurt their tongues on the sharp can edges — so be careful when you do this!
These are just a few ideas on how you can be a “green” kitty! I bet you can think up more.
Bugs are good protein. Before you eat them, make sure it wasn’t RAID that killed them.
I don’t always rinse cat food cans. So lazy I am! Actually, it goes against my goat to waste water to rinse a can! A tough one…
The only problem with paper bags is that humans like me can’t resist grabbing the bag and closing it up when we find a cat in there. It may seem cruel, but some of us are just compelled to do it.
Excellent Tips as always! Happy Earth Day!!
@Jen It is! Dead mice get kind of icky after a while and dead birds tend to fall apart. Dead bugs fall apart too, but humans don’t get as grossed out about cleaning up the mess as with other dead things.
The bug recycling one is really good. It’s much better than recycling the dead mouse or dead bird.
Great tips, Sparkle! Pimp and Moo do all of them except that last one (thank goodness!). 🙂
We think Sparkle has great ideas for how kitties can recycle! Especially the cardboard box and paper bag recycling–can’t figure out why mom makes bad words and tosses them all in the compost when she trips on them after we’ve arranged them the way we like all over the house, but then humans aren’t as coordinated as cats. Kitties are VERY inventive with toys and other things, so we’re keeping track of what we’re doing today to save the earth and we’ll be posting tomorrow (mostly because mom was frowning and mumbling about FB not letting her get things done today).
Sparkle, you are one smart kitty. The gang at Cat Saturday blog welcome your ideas for their Kitty Wisdom 101 series.
I LOVE your ideas for saving the earth, Sparkle! Grace has been doing her part–she has been playing with the same bag in the kitchen for MONTHS now! I don’t like it much, but she is saving the earth by keeping it out of a landfill. She also pees outside in the mulch instead of wasting kitty litter in the house. She is very thoughtful of the earth.
We like to put teef marks in paper and rip up cardboards to make then easier to recycle.

Happy Earth Day Sparkle! We like recycling bugs – especially spiders. They do make fun hockey pucks!
Now that is sound advice and so easy to do!
Happy Earth Day Sparkle!
I luvs da ideas you has for us kitties to helps out, especially da boxes! Dem is always recycled by me MOL hehehe
Bug recycling is an excellent idea! We must try that. 🙂
Our human recycles everything she can, including our food cans, which really aren’t that yucky to rinse out at all. Plus our city has a composting program, so she does that too.
BTW, we understand The Island Cats got the idea to make their blog carbon-neutral from you….Well, we saw that post on their blog today and our human made her personal blog carbon-neutral right away. She got a reply back from them too, within 15 minutes, and was very impressed!
Excellent advice. Allie knows all about those bag handles….we had a skeery incident when she got caught and the bag started to CHASE her….can you imagine???

Those are some great cat ideas for Earth Day Sparkle. We especially like boxes and do jump into them at first opportunity. Thanks for those good ideas. Happy Earth day to you.
Happy Earth Day, Sparkle!
Happy Earth Day! We’re gonna go find some bugs to recyle!!
(pee ess. We made our blog carbon neutral too! Thanks for the idea!)
We are huge fans of the cardboard box and paper bag recycling, it is very important to get in them the first chance you get.
Happy Earth Day!
