When I go on therapy cat visits to offer healing paws and purrs, I am actually doing more good than many people realize. In fact, all cats are healers, and there is research to prove it… research that has been around for 10 years, in fact!
A study from 2009 found that people living with cats have a reduced risk for all cardiovascular disease. Researchers even found a trend for reduced risk of death due to cardiovascular disease for those who had past cat ownership! So the benefits of having cats in your life continue even after your kitty is gone. Interestingly, no such correlation was found for dogs (although I’m sure there are lots of other benefits to having dogs in your life).
I’m not sure why studies like this remain buried until a news outlet or two and a bunch of social media shares bring them out again. But the important thing to know is that we cats are still not getting our due as healers.
What can we do to spread the word farther? I am doing my part by being a therapy cat and working paws-on with patients. And lots of you kitties out there are doing your own in-home caretaking. How else can we let people know that cats are good medicine?
