Nothing against dogs or you dog loving humans, but I really dislike it when someone says a cat is being dog-like, as if that is a compliment! Sure, we cats can show affection and sometimes follow our humans around the house, some of us (like me) walk on leashes, and sometimes we will do tricks (usually for treats) — but we do it on our own terms. Dogs do it because of their desperate need for approval. When humans compare cat behavior to dog behavior, they are only showing that they don’t understand us cats, or the motivations behind what we do. Feline ways come from a different mental place than dogs, even if the outcome looks similar.
Besides, there are certain dog behaviors that I am sure humans would rather we cats not have — and frankly, I am glad we don’t do these either!
- Dogs eat poop! Other dogs’ poop, our poop out of the litter box… they are just poop eating machines. We kitties would never do this, unless there was something really, really wrong with us.
- Bark, bark, bark! Some cats are more vocal than others — Siamese and Oriental breeds and mixes, for example — but nothing compares to the annoyance of a dog that won’t shut up. Usually it’s a neighbor’s dog that’s doing this, and he is probably bored and not getting enough enrichment and companionship. But whatever dog is doing it, doesn’t it make you crazy?
- Hump legs and other (sometimes living) things. Male dogs can be love machines in some really inappropriate ways! Actually female dogs can be pretty annoying too — one of my human’s friends had a female German shepherd who liked to smell visitors’ crotches. Rude!
- Drool. Whether or not you believe “cats rule,” there is no doubt that dogs drool! True, some cats drool when they are happy or know they are about to get a treat (I do this sometimes, but just a little bit). But it’s nothing like the disgusting rivers of drool that come pouring out of a dog’s mouth! Especially big dogs. Plus they can’t seem to keep their tongues in their mouths. If we kitties show our tongues, it’s just the tip, and it’s cute.
- Pee when they are excited. My human’s family had a puppy that did this whenever everyone returned from an outing that did not include her. This behavior carried on well into her canine adulthood. One of my human’s childhood memories is dodging dog pee every time she came home from Disneyland. Maybe that’s why she eventually became a cat person.
Maybe dogs would be better off if they became more cat-like! Just think of the things we kitties can do that dogs can’t:
- We can use our front paws to grab toys and treats! We don’t have to wait for them to be handed to us.
- We can jump up on counters in a single leap. Even better, we don’t feel bad if we are told we are not supposed to do that.
- Chatter at birds out the window. It’s fun for us, and it amuses the humans too.
- Be flexible! We cats are so flexible we can practically make ourselves liquid. I bet dogs, with their stiff spines and legs envy our ability to fit into some very strange places.
- Purr! It’s one of the very most amazing things we cats do. Sadly for dogs, they will never be able to do this.

Cats are DA BEST!!! Paws down!
When I was a kid. my “oldest brother” was a Cocker Spaniel named Feathers. He was very polite, didn’t lick or bark to excess, let us lie on him, and would do tricks for waffles. He was a very cool dog. From the time I started high school, however, I have worked for kitties and never regretted a minute of that time. We have two doggies that live next door, and Xavier and Ollie are very polite and quiet, but I still think I’ll stay with cats. Cats are SO much more dignified–at least most of the time. Except when you’re washing your nether region when you have company….
Very true! The Staff posted on facebook that scientists have now proved that cats are as affectionate as dogs, they just show it differently! I think we win paws down on that front because we smell better!!
MOL!! We know all about doggy nonsense…..
Of course you are right!! We cars ARE just so much cooler!!!
Waffles would like to challenge the dogs to a game of fetch. He thinks he can do it better that ANY dog!
… and for once, he’s actually right!
; ) Katie
GO CATS!
Our humans really like woofies and had two before they switched to kitties. Mom says that the barking does get on her last nerve. We are now a cat household only! And you are right…nothing beats a purring cat. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
All good points, but to be fair, cats do have a bad habit of vomiting and throwing up hairballs all over the house. Still, Cats rule so I just clean it up and say “poor Spunky.”
After reading your list with 5 points I’m even happier than I was before being a cat 😀
XOXO
There is no doubt that cat’s rule!!! The eating poop thing…. just gross!
Bravo, Summer! Bravo! Now we like being cats even MORE (as if that were even possible)! 🙂
And have you ever seen a dog up on a top of a tall bookcase? Yet we belong there.
These at all great points, Summer. We kitties sure do have it good, don’t we? Thank goodness we aren’t anything like dogs!
Yeah you may be onto something with this list have to pretty much agree
TW dated someone with a dog and she didn’t like the dog coming near her cos it drooled so much. Ick!
We don’t want to be compared to any dogs like that! Our sisfur Sadie didn’t do any of those things other than her tongue hung out but that was to keep her cool because she was always hot since she was a husky! She did teach me to follow Mommy everywhere around the house since I was a baby and did what she did. I still follow Mommy today so she likes to think it’s because Sadie taught me. Really, I’m just hoping she’ll get the treats out of the various drawers around the house!
Purrs,
Angel
There is nothing wrong with dogs. I love dogs and cats. Some cats are dog-like, like the Ragdoll breed. There is nothing wrong with that either.
Cats getting on counters is gross. I do not allow my 3 to do this. Both animals drool, from old age. Cats (and dogs) eat their puppies or kittens’ poop and pee to hide it from attackers, and so they can go regardless.
I’m sure glad I’m a cat!
Cats and dogs allow for a variety in life. Who would want a cat to be dog-like? Who would want a dog to be cat-like? It is their unique characteristics (some on both sides , less appealing than others!) that makes them loveable in their specific entirety! 🙂 We love all creatures, great and small. In the cottage, some times dogs drool and cats rule . . . some times cats drool and dogs rule! 🙂
the critters in the cottage xo
I know the dogs are jealous of our counter-jumpin abilities!
Who would want to be a dog? Eating poop is gross. Cats rule!
Being a kitty is SO much better than being a dog. We have lots of advantages. (Though Newton is sometimes guilty of leg-humping… so that one isn’t confined to dogs, unfortunately.)
Dogs also forget they can’t put their claws away like cats. So when they jump up on you, their claws are out, ready to scratch.
Also, I have known a dog who tried to purr while he was enjoying his dinner. It wasn’t quite a growl…
Dogs eat vomit too, and cat’s poo (at least the dog of Momo’s brother). It’s gross, we know… We’re glad we are kitties ! Purrs
I meant to say as a dog – not do!!!!
Well, Summer, as a do I must refute some of your facts. 1. I do not eat poop! That is just plain gross. 2. I do bark a lot but it is only to warn off anyone who would dare approach my momma. I can’t help it if everyone is after my mom! 3. I definately do not hump anything and as a chihuahua I am a long way away from crotches! 4.I do not drool. too un-lady-like. 5. I have to admit I do pee on occasion when I am extra-happy; but that is only because I am a lady of a certain age and sometimes we leak. Happens with age! Just wanted to set the record straight. I love you and not mad or anything!! Love, LadyBird
Cats rule!!! Our mom grew up with dogs, sometimes with as much as 5 at a time. And she has to keep continued watch that they don’t eat poop, yuck!
You are very wise with your postings Summer. That’s what we love about Sparkle too.
Both of those lists make total sense to me pretty Summer!
You are right in every way. I wish I had written it. Actually in my human bog as I call it, not Katie’s that I help her with and on Face Book I have written something very similar. Cats are cats! They are NOT dogs. Enjoy each for their own qualities and try your best to remember they are different species!
You are so right Sparkle. It’s great that cats and dogs are different. I love not having all of the messes that my Mom has with all of her dogs. I also enjoy that cats can figure out how to entertain themselves from time to time. Cats are wonderful creatures.
Great list, Summer! But you forgot one…sometimes dogs really stink…you know, that “wet dog smell”. One of Mom’s friends had to take his dog to the groomer every month because of the stench. We kitties always smell good–wet or dry! Except maybe after we take a poop and the odor clings to our fur. Then, Mom will pet us really hard and poof it out of our furs!
Purrs,
Serafina, Arya, Bean, Iggy, Teddy, and Useless
Those 5 things you mentioned…UGH…yes!
Excellent points Summer! Mes must say that mes misses my hairy slobbery sister Bob. She was a good furrend to cats, peoples and other dogs. Always gentle (even when she was a puppy) and mes could sleeps with her! She did not chase us and she hardly ever barked or sniffed my butt.
Now Cinnamon, shes a poop eating, bark bark barker, drooling Pee-er! And yous never wants to walks past her – her nose is COLD!!!!
Kisses
Nellie
There is no better than – there is different from – me, I love all creatures great and small.
growing up I always thought I was a dog person and not a cat person. the boyz have helped me mend my ways.
Well said! My boyfriend’s family has a husky that pokes her nose right between my legs whenever my back is to her. Ug. I have to always have my back to the wall or she gooses me. Cats are more dignified and they would never do this!
Heh, this goes perfectly with my cartoon about Abys being “doglike” and Jake being offended…
But one other one I always mention is TONGUES. Dogs’ tongues are slimy and gross – and they use them a lot. Cats’ tongues are nice and dry and when you get licked it’s a special honour!
When I was little, I didn’t like that when you petted a dog, it just stayed still. No feedback that it even noticed you were petting it. But cats push back when you pet them. And purr. But the pushing back, leaning in, sort of helping you pet them…I love that about cats.
Yes, we agree that dogs and cats have very different traits. BUT dogs don’t dig holes in the walls like cats do or tear up furniture. But they each have their own good traits. They are both good animals.
Cats do rule! We do appreciate you stopping by our blog and commenting – Mom promises to get her act in gear and get to blogging and commenting again. She is still blue over losing Lily.
Still proving that cats rule!!!
Good points Summer. I think our cat , Spooky must be part dog because he drools and he attempts to hump our arms ( he is neutered too).
Oh yes, we are definitely superior to the canine herd. Especially our purr ability. Who wouldn’t envy that?
You are so right, Summer. Cats totally rule!!!
Reading that list makes me very happy that I am not a dog!
You go Summer! Tell it like it is. We kitties are unique and don’t want to be “dog” like. Cats Rule!
Right on, Summer! We don’t want to be dogs.
Lucy and I love this list!
Cats definitely rule!!!
We are happy to be cats and do as we please which doesn’t include having to be dragged round the streets on a lead – how humiliating is that!!
Luv Hannah and Lucy xx xx
After reading these points, we are even more happy to be cats 🙂
