Thursday Garden Fail

March 31, 2011 By: Sparkle Cat34 Comments

Around the time my human was planning my Super Cat No-Football Sunday party, she got a fresh, bushy catnip plant from the pet store.

Looks delectable, doesn't it?

By the end of March, this is what it looked like.

A sorry shadow of its former self.

The poor thing was dying by degrees. This is the fate of most plants that fall into the hands of my human.

And no, we cats did not help kill it. My human did this all on her own.

I don’t know how she does it. Keeping a catnip plant alive is not all that complicated!

Examining the damage.

It’s still tasty, though!

Honestly! We cats had NOTHING to do with its decline.

In a last ditch effort, my human decided to put it in one of the built-in planters outside, in hopes that if she ignores it, it will come back to life.

This was a couple of days ago - it actually looks worse now.

She used a spoon to dig the hole! She says she has a trowel “somewhere,” but she does not know where that somewhere is.

Just when you thought she could not get any lamer.

I did not think this gardening post deserved the Society of Feline Gardeners badge — I did not want to embarrass the real gardening cats!

Oh, it should do fine outside as long as it gets some water, Sparkle! We have a catnip plant and it self-seeds itself every year. There is catnip coming up ALL over the place now!!! I hope yours does that too!

Sorry it took so long for me to arrive Sparkle…but at least your mom is trying. I’d be proud to have you as a member of the Society of Feline Gardeners. It’s all about learning and trying…even if your human kills the nip plants. There is hope.

Alfie and I will be there to assist!

We think the catnip plant will do well on its own outside. Sometimes “Benign Neglect” is the way to go…

Ha ha ha ha ha! My Human planted me some seeds last summer and she grew a really nice bushy plant but now it looks JUST LIKE YOURS.

But you know what I found out? I found out I don’t really like the catnip plant anyway, MOL!

Oh that’s too bad your catnip plant is shriveling but many it’ll come back now that it’s outside. Our mommy can’t grow anything either and has even killed 3, yes 3, AIR plants! They don’t even need water and she killed them! That’s talent.

We bet in no time it will be big and bushy again!
Just make sure to remind her it needs some water.

Hahameow! Your post made us laff and laff cuz our Teri says she can’t grow things that grow by the side of the freeway! She also uses kitchen implements in the garden and never digs a big enough hole or fertilizes or anything…those poor plants are on their own after she buys them! Funny, she plants catnip and it doesn’t thrive, and then she plants nip at work (a cat vet) and it keeps us in nip all year…Go figure!

Sparkle, I wouldn’t worry so much about your humans lack of gardening skills. The one and only reason our outside plants survive is because they’re outside! Houseplants however become incredibly depressed upon entering our home (we think they’ve heard the scary stories about the plants that come into our house bushy and full of life, only to leave whithered and decayed via the bin).

Only the other week The Mum mananged to murder in cold bloody one dragon tree and three peace lillies!

Two more houseplants have been purchased, we give them a week.

Our mom can’t keep anything alive either. She has thought many times about buying us catnip or cat grass, but in addition to being a plant killer, she is also incredibly lazy.

Oh wow. Your Mom probably ought to purchase dried catnip for you. It doesn’t look like she is doing real great in the growing dept.

The catnip in the containers from the store are hard to keep alive. Maybe in the ground it will have better luck. At the Petsmart where our mom works parttime, she says they keep the nip in the fridge to help it last longer. Maybe you could try that with your next container of the stuff.

Fear not Sparkle, I’m sure that outside in the sun and fresh air the nip will thrive 🙂 I used to buy cat grass from the store and it was so tall and soft and green at the beginning….then a few weeks later it would be wilted and yellow and yuk. I gave up. Some plants just don’t do well indoors.

Marmie bought me wheatgrass from PetSmart…it died within 2 weeks. You’re doing good! The same thing happened to my Aunt Beatrice and Uncle Irvin’s wheatgrass plant. We are wondering if all this plant death is really a reflection on our green thumbs or not.

We think it’ll be fine outside, probably better outside than in. It’s a very hardy plant, as we think all mint family plants are. The mom laughed, though, at the spoon! 😀

MOL, Well Sparkle at least you got a little taste. I bet it does do well outside. It probably just needed some more root room. At least your Mom tried to grow some nip. Our Mom has had seeds forever. Maybe she will get going on it now after reading this. Hope you have a great day.

I think it’s going to survive outside. Because when my mom bought nip. It was in the samll pot and it did not grow well. Since she put in the ground. It’s just grow so quick and spread everywhere. Now she have to move other plants away because the nip cover it all.
Good Luck for your nip !
    xoxo
