Everyone knows how cats enjoy sitting on books, right? So my human was wondering if digital books would ever replace physical books — for cats. As an experiment, she placed her Kindle Fire and the handiest book (which happened to be the recently-reviewed Cats & Daughters) next to each other. Then she expected me and Binga to cooperate by showing our preference. As you can see, we were dubious about this.
Not to mention uncooperative. I saw no reason why I should sit on either of these things. After all, the book had been read already! Where’s the fun in sitting on it now?
Binga was even less inclined to help out my human with her experiment. The book and the Kindle Fire sat on the rug for days. Eventually my human charged the Kindle, since the battery died, hoping that maybe we would be attracted to its warmth. It did not work.
Just when it looked like the experiment was going to be an epic fail, I decided to give my human a break and make a choice. As you can see, I picked the old school, made-from-trees book.
Honestly, I am not sure what this was supposed to prove.
Sparkle, your human needs to be reading the book or Kindle in order for the experiment to really work 🙂 Nice of you to cooperate, still. Our Pip will go out of her way to sit on a magazine or piece of paper that is on the floor.

It’s hard to chew on a Kindle in a really satisfying way. I’m not much of a chewer, but one of the kitties who came before me chewed up dozens of books as the Human was reading them. Eh, not really worth the trouble to me.
Sparkle, your mom should know better! There is no reason to sit on a book that isn’t in use! If you can’t sit right on the spot that is being read, then what is the point?
I’m glad my mom doesn’t have a Kindle or any of those reader things. I don’t like to sit on books but I sure do enjoy pulling them from our bookcases and biting on them!
Sparkle she should have been reading both of them for true test as I know when Mom is reading a book is when I want to rub against it. Through I think that the final result is makes sense as regular books have a great feeling when bonking
What a tease Sparkle sitting in the middle….you certainly know how to get the human going! I know you were only making a choice to please your human but I’m totally with you on the honest to goodness paper paperback.
Sparkle you know that humans have to be humoured! It keeps them happy and us fed! mol
love Austin xx
Well….we happen to LOVE the Kindle here because Grace can lie on my stomach AND get pet WHILE I read and turn pages with one hand on the Kindle. It’s definitely kitty-friendly on that level!
Sparkle you know how it is , we must indulge our humans! 😛
The book. Every time Sparkle and btw, that’s what my mom said too. She has no intention of ever pitching her hardback books. Ever, And she prefers the feel of a book of paper in her hand. Besides, she loves the fragrance of paper and ink.
I would choose the book Sparkle..books are more funner and you can scratch them..
ROFL!!!
😆 😆 😆 😆 😆
Oh Ladycats, you two are so funny! You sure gave your Human a run for her money, huh? Cute post.
Everykitty knows it’s only fun to try to sit on them when humans are trying to read them! Sheesh!
MOL!
It’s not whether the book is an ebook or paper. It’s whether or not mom’s trying to read it at the moment. If she’s trying to read it, one of us will be trying to sit on it. After all, her attention is supposed to be on us!
I sort of sgree Sparkle, I love the feel of the real books too, and besides, the pages are easier to chew!
We only have old fashioned book around here so that will be our choice. By the way our local no kill shelter’s thrift shop had a copy of your book there for sale. How cool is that? Mom was donating lots of stuff for them to resell.
I really think your human needs a distraction.
Like a goat kid!
😀 😀 😀 What an interesting experience ! I can understand you as a cat you prefer paper because that smells better then plastic or whatever material it is ! I don’t have a Kindle yet, but I think I will prefer it !
I prefer whatever book my human is trying to read–kindle or regular…
This experiment was flawed! Everyone knows that cats want to sit on the book or e-reader that you are USING! LOL!
Tell your human that you’re only interested in the Kindle if she’s actually using it. We love to sit on Our Persons computer when she’s trying to type, otherwise we prefer books, more cushiony. Bandit, selleck, and Their Person, Emily. 😆
Our mama might choose the Kindle – but ONLY when she is medically confined to bed. Otherwise she would think like we do (as all good humans should). And we would choose the book, of course, and kitties do not have to justify their actions. Purrrrrr!
Too funny, Sparkle! We always like to sit in the middle of Mamma’s newspaper… we really don’t bother very much with her ebook reader. It’s not as much fun when you can’t hear the paper crinkle as you rumple it up and break it in for the human 🙂
Very kind of you to take pity on your Mommy and choose, sweet Sparkle; we always learn so much from you beautiful girls!!MOL…Hope you all enjoy a lovely Tuesday, dear friends…xoxo…Calle, Halle, Sukki
Definitely – Old School all the way!
My Mom says that SHE would choose “the old-school, made-from-trees book ANY DAY”
Gee Sparkle……not sure what your human had in mind but I would have curled up on the rug any old day over either a warm Kindle Fire OR a cold paper book. In the end though – if forced to choose – hands down it would be a paper book…..better smells involved any old day! 😉

Psychology of the feline kind! If you want Kitty to do something, Kitty will wait until you are no longer interested to participate. Now if you had sat and flipped a few pages of the book for just long enough, one of the girls may have decided it was worth it to interfere.
Foolish, foolish humans. We do not perform when expected or wanted. If one of those things just happened to fall on the floor, we might have been interested…but! Purrs and hugs from the kitties at The Cat on My Head, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Josette
MOL MOL Sparkle…we cat do not do anything unless it is OUR idea!!!
Good for you holding out until you deemed the experiment worthy of your purrfect approval!!
Hugs madi your BFFF
Nothing will ever replace the feel of paper on one’s bottom.
Hmm, we think we’d prefer a comfy blanket or pillow. But, we suppose that a paperback book of decent size would be softer than an e-reader, unless the e-reader cover was particularly cushy. Maybe that’s what your human needs to test next–the softness of e-reader covers versus a thick, large paperback. 😛
The things we have to do for our humans!
Luv Hannah and Lucy xx xx
I think we would have chosen the book too. It is just more familiar not to mention there is a cat on the front. It is so much fun to sit on another cat.
Have a great day.
Sparkle, we cats only want to sit on whatever our mom is actually reading.
Sometimes you just have to humor your human.
We want to sit on whatever our hooman is reading, of course!
Oh my dear, you do look so proud on your book!
Sometimes we have to humor these weird humans. It’s trying, I know. But there are treats.
Maybe your Mom should try the experiment by placing both items on the floor.
Why choose either when there is a comfy carpet ?
