Spay Day Party!

September 1, 2014 By: Summer Samba87 Comments

I was spayed last week, and I’ve decided to have a party to celebrate! But first let me tell you about my day.

They don't put these on you at cat shows!

I should have known something was up when my human took me to the vet in an old carrier instead of my pretty pink one. But I was oblivious. I just thought I was going somewhere fun. And it was mostly, for a while. Then they stuck this paper collar on me.

Actually, her name is right on it.

They gave me a number and took away my name!

Honestly, it was the collar, not fleas!!

Plus the thing was itchy. I decided to explore while my human and the vet were talking. I actually wasn’t supposed to be spayed this soon but according to my human, I have been displaying some behavior that indicated I was about to get hot or something like that. I don’t get it — it’s already hot here in southern California and besides, we have air conditioning. Anyhow I was rolling on the floor and looking cute and flirty and my human said, “I think we’re getting to her just in time.” Then she left me there and I was the star of the vet clinic! They put me in a cage for a while and everyone talked to me and admired me. It was almost like being at a cat show until they knocked me out. Then I woke up with a cone on my head.

Bad paparazzi shot

My human felt really bad about the cone, but I’m the kind of kitty who chews on her stomach, so I had to wear something. So she went to the pet store that night and came home with a more fashionable alternative.

Maybe this counts as a life preserver - I should ask Bailey the Boat Cat

It does make it hard to clean up after eating, though! My human says it was kind of pricey for a one-time use, but she’ll donate it to a rescue now that I’m done with it. So this means I’m taking off doing any shows for about a month while my fur grows back. But it is a lot better than the alternative. My human and my breeder both agreed that being a mom would not be good for my career as a therapy cat in training — I’d have to take a lot of time off to care for a family. And I was developing at an early age and too young to be a mom anyhow.

Does it look like I'm smiling? Cause I am

So I think it was a good idea to trust my human with this decision!

Now here’s the fun party part! Instead of today being Labor Day, how about us girls have a Spay Day instead! Do you have a photo of yourself after you were spayed? If you are on Facebook, post a photo of your shaved belly on my Facebook page and I’ll share it! If you are on Twitter, post your photo there and tag me, @sparklecat (I’m posting from Sparkle’s old Twitter name). I’ll retweet! Not on either? You can send me a photo at summer AT sparklecat.com by the end of today and I will share it here!

What about you boycats? Well, you can cheer us girls on and congratulate us for our wise decision! I hope you are neutered too — it’s the only way to be!

Hi Summer! My name is Abby and my mom looks worry today. She said that tomorrow I’m going to be spay and I don’t know what is that. Also she has been talking with daddy about my being in a crate for a few days… but I don’t know how many. She says that because I have an older brother that I love to chase and bite, I have to be in that thing for some days… Do you know how many days Do I need to stay there? of if there is any other solution? because she really … doesn’t know much … my brother is her first cat … Thanks
I’ll be waiting because I can’t sleep thinking about it!

Ask your vet – I was supposed to stay quiet for a few days, and they gave me some pain killer meds. My human just gave me one dose and I was pretty much cool and calm and sleepy for about three days. I didn’t need to be crated, but then I’m not particularly hyper.

Thanks for your answer and I’m not very hyper but I love to be with my brother everywhere, that’s why my mom is afraid because she said maybe I’m going to want to play… Do I have to be separate from him? I think that’s not fair!!! I like him 🙂 he’s my big brother that I can bother all the time

I’d say maybe for a day or two, just to make sure you aren’t going to pull open your stitches. Like I said, check with your vet. We kittens are really pretty resilient.

We laffed cuz we thought you were having an enjoyable Spa Day, hahameow! We can tell you that we are all happier kitties here being ‘fixed’…no strange hots or night time yowling…though Disco still sprays from time to time, sigh…We think your pink ‘life preserver’ is kinda cute and who knows, you make need it again later sometime if you get something to lick at…

A great pawty Summer. Very impawtent to be spayed or neutered and we all joined the club as soon as Dad could take us to the Vet. Fur me it was no big deal. Being a man-cat you just have to sit a bit softly fur a week.
    Paws up to Summer!

Glad to see it went well. That is a lovely new collar. My girl cats were the types to not bother with their bellies when they were spayed so they had no need for collars.

I was 9months old when mom got me, so no shaved bellies. My brothers are neutered, basically shriveled cheese balls. Don’t touch the cheese balls!

Glad you are doing well, Summer. I was spayed at around 5 months old – about 3 months after I got adopted. I’m not sure if we have any photos of me with my shaved fur. I’ll have to get my mum to have a look.

yep…soay/neuter is the ONLY WAY to end feral cat colonies and bad cat breeders…Kitten Mills are as prevalent as Puppy Mills…just no one ever talks about them…but I, Savannah and The Kid Sage…will be doing that very soon…way to go Summer!!!

Yay, Summer! All of us kitties here are “missing bits”, so we are glad you joined us! Your pink pillow collar is like MMM’s blue one. The mom bought one last year hoping it would be comfy and help with her chewing (it didn’t).

I’m glad you are doing well Summer. My human always wrote to Sparkle but she has decided to let me take over writing to you as I am really the one with all the insight! Before my mom could take me home the shelter spayed me. It was an awful place and they gave me back to her with fleas and a bad respiratory infection, so I am SO glad you are ok!

You look so adorable with your collar but the pink one is so fashionable and really suits you 🙂

I see your human has an old carrier for the vet as well…my mom has this ANCIENT carrier- and I’m not kidding it’s 50 years old! It held her first kitten and she can’t part with it so I get stuck inside every time we go to the vet.

    Get well soon Summer!!

Glad everything went well for your spay Summer. Me and Eric got neutered when we were 5 1/2 months old. I don’t remember anything about it, but mum said we both had a reaction to the anaesthetic which made us hyperactive. She said we were literally bouncing off the walls all night.

It was very smart of your human to get you spayed, and it sounds like you were an excellent patient! I was spayed too, but my mommy doesn’t want to share any photos of me because I didn’t handle the spaying so well and the pictures of me looking sad and in pain might scare some other pet parents, and we want to promote spaying and neutering, not turn anyone away from it! But I can say that even though I went through a lot, it was definitely worth it! (Maybe I would have felt better if I’d had one of those cool pink collars….? 😉 )

Good for you, Summer! I have 8-1/2 kitties here because somebody in my living area didn’t believe in spaying, and one mommie who was only about a year old had *8* kittens. That is a *lot* of work. Something bad happened where she had them, and she had to bring them all out where it was warm and dry – but then there were a lot of people around, so she only had time to take one to a new safe place. So there were 6 4-day old kittens left alone. Nobody in the house wanted to be a mommie cat to 6 newborn kittens, so they were taken to a local rescue group. 2 weeks later we were able to find the one kitten – and we trapped the mommie. Baby was taken away from mommie cat 2 weeks ago so mommie wouldn’t teach her that people were bad. Baby will be 11 weeks old next week, and she is getting spayed at the end of the week. It’s younger than we would like, but she will be going to a new home soon and we want to be sure she won’t try to have 8 kittens herself. Mommie cat was spayed the day after we trapped her, and then continued to be the mommie for Baby so nobody else had to do it (a good thing, because the big cats don’t like Baby, and this human is not a very good kitten-mommie).
