My first official therapy cat visit returning to work was the children’s hospital near us. It was our first time there in over a year. My human was definitely more nervous than I was, mainly because she was worried I would be rusty. I bet you can guess that she shouldn’t have bothered worrying.
It really wasn’t all that different from so many other visits. There were some things my human had to deal with that didn’t concern me. They took her temperature and she had to wear a mask. A few things, like our sign in book and supplies weren’t where they usually were. Since we hadn’t been there in so long, the administrator who works with us took us to all the different sections and helped out.
Everyone was so excited to see me! If you saw yesterday’s blog post, you might have noticed that I don’t like being ignored. I was treated like a VIK (Very Important Kitty) here! We went through the exam rooms first, and on our way to the patients, I saw a lot of staff who wanted to pet me. That was awesome.
The administrator human made sure we saw every patient who wanted to see us. Even better, she spoke Spanish, so she could explain in detail about my therapy cat work and helped my human answer questions. The funny part about this is my human could totally understand her! She just can’t talk very well in Spanish. But when she could talk to English speaking patients, she had a lot to say. She spent a lot of time with one mother, answering questions about how therapy pets work. Many people don’t realize the therapy dog or cat is a personal pet of the team member. And it is our teamwork that makes the visits so special.
After the exam room, we went through the waiting area and saw lots of kids. I had my six foot leash on and my human did her best to be socially distant and let me do the work. We also took lots of photos! We are down to only a few left in the camera. I hope the next hospital we visit in a couple of weeks has refills.
There was only one boy in the rehab area, and the pre op section doesn’t get used on Fridays, so it was a pretty quick visit. It was still a little tiring for my human. Me? I was happy and wanted to play when we got home! I’m so glad to be back.
