I had a quiet post-Christmas visit at the assisted living facility. We only visited at one house, since the other house was still on a Covid lockdown. When we were signing in at the first house, a resident was at the front desk, and she actually remembered my name!
There weren’t as many residents as usual in the big room, and a lot of them were napping. Some of the regulars weren’t around, like the lady who usually asks me for high fives. A couple of the older men who I often see were there. There was also a younger man who was staring at the TV. It’s always strange for my human to see a resident who is younger than she is, but not everybody has age-related dementia. The younger man didn’t seem like he was interested in me until the end of our visit, and then he remarked about how much I enjoyed being petted.
Another resident I hadn’t seen before was a tall, frail lady. A staff member led her to a sofa where she sat down. She was happy to see me, if a little vague, but my human could tell she was kind of depressed about her condition, even if she couldn’t articulate it.
I did see a couple of regulars. The lady with the eyes going in different directions was there. She’s the one who didn’t pay attention for me for the longest time, and then started to enjoy my visits. She had a white bow in her hair that was actually a paper napkin, and she petted me for a long time. The lady who always cried when she saw me was there too. Except she is in a wheelchair now and she didn’t remember me. She still remembered how much she loved cats, though. And she didn’t cry this time.
It was a very nice visit, if rather sad.

Pee S: Happy Mew Yeer to you an Miss J 🙂 🙂
What you and your human do, Summer is a labor of love. Those people need you more than anyone. You never know what gets through. Even if they don’t react or seem interested,, they may feel something inside
That must have been a very hard visit, Summer. Thank you and your human for all you do, and for bringing some happiness to those folks.
I suppose your visits to this place will always be different or a variety of
happenings. You do a good job reporting. Even if they don’t, or can’t say
how much they enjoy your visits I’m sure you add to their day for the
residents.
It’s heartbreaking. You both are angels with all you do!!!
Thank you for seeing these people, Summer. Getting old is not for sissies and, unfortunately, it is a part of life with which all of us will have to deal if we live long enough… Bless you and your Human for taking the time to visit with them. I am sure they enjoyed your visit.
That does sound like a sad visit. I am sure you made everyone less sad though. XO
Summer, I think you brought a lot of joy to the people in that home 🙂
Purrs, Julie
Very sad but we know you brought some moments of joy.
Oh that is sad, Summer, but you brought them some happy moments. That is very good of you and your human.
It may have been kinda sad, but you still brought some happiness to those people.
I went through this with my dad as he was in a facility for 8 yrs. & passed Jan. 2021 from COVID. It’s very difficult to deal with. Bless you Summer for bringing a bit of cheer to them. My dad loved cats & I know he would have loved to pet you.
How sad it had to be.
It is sad to see people you have seen before deteriorating. They are always glad to see you though.
