My Matatabi Stick Face

July 14, 2020 By: Summer Samba32 Comments

Summer visits the local pet shop, and finds out all about matatabi sticks, and why cats love them so much.

You may not notice it at first because it almost blends in with the background. But if you look in the upper right hand corner (in the direction of where my eyes are looking), you’ll see what it is. A matatabi stick… and it is my new best friend!

Some of you know what matatabi sticks are, but for those of you who don’t, they are sticks from the silver vine plant, and most cats love them! Silver vine has a different intoxicant from catnip, and a cat that does not respond to catnip, may still enjoy silver vine and matatabi sticks.

Lucky me, I’m responsive to both catnip and silver vine.

Anyhow, let’s go back to the beginning here. My human and I were at our local pet shop getting some food for Boodie. We were the last customers of the day and the only ones in the store, so my human was trying to hurry me up. But I wanted to explore, and human schedules mean nothing to me.

There was a lot to check out! Such as these bags of catnip.

I was enjoying them so much that I completely forgot about my favorite Barnyard Buddies catnip toys!

My human wanted to get my attention away from the catnip bags, but in a nice way, not just by hauling me off them. She saw a small bucket of these matatabi sticks, so she grabbed one and offered it to me.

What can I say? I took the bait! And my human took it (and me) to the cash register.

Those sticks sound pawsome, Summer! The look in your eyes tells me that they are good stuff. Dexter is a silvervine junkie. I bet he would love them too. Thank you for introducing us to these. 🙂

I have those! Thanks to some cat who put them in my Secret Paws package a few years ago. You’re reminding me that TW hasn’t pulled them out in a long time. I bet she’s chewed them all up herself.

I didn’t know about those sticks – took a while to
pronounce the word. Very good pictures here.
How nice that you get to go shopping for Boodie.
An experienced shopper like yourself would be
sure to get something good for old Boodie.

My cats have had one experience with silvervine … and it got really ugly. Bear’s our catnip fiend (which is funny, because he didn’t care for it when he was younger!) – but I’d never seen as many whacky paws and hissy p!ssy nonsense as when I brought the silvervine out. Apparently, both of my cats are nasty drunks when it comes to silvervine! We should try it again, just in case that was just a bad day. How does Boodie react to silvervine?
