You may not notice it at first because it almost blends in with the background. But if you look in the upper right hand corner (in the direction of where my eyes are looking), you’ll see what it is. A matatabi stick… and it is my new best friend!
Some of you know what matatabi sticks are, but for those of you who don’t, they are sticks from the silver vine plant, and most cats love them! Silver vine has a different intoxicant from catnip, and a cat that does not respond to catnip, may still enjoy silver vine and matatabi sticks.
Lucky me, I’m responsive to both catnip and silver vine.
Anyhow, let’s go back to the beginning here. My human and I were at our local pet shop getting some food for Boodie. We were the last customers of the day and the only ones in the store, so my human was trying to hurry me up. But I wanted to explore, and human schedules mean nothing to me.
There was a lot to check out! Such as these bags of catnip.
I was enjoying them so much that I completely forgot about my favorite Barnyard Buddies catnip toys!
My human wanted to get my attention away from the catnip bags, but in a nice way, not just by hauling me off them. She saw a small bucket of these matatabi sticks, so she grabbed one and offered it to me.
What can I say? I took the bait! And my human took it (and me) to the cash register.

I just tried these and the gang wasn’t impressed!
I think we need one of those. Do you just chew in it or what?
Purrz!
Selina

Thanks, Summer. Great infor and cute photos of you at the pet store. I’m always looking for new items for my cat, so I will imm order some matatabi sticks for Angel. Excited!!
Wow….u were on quite the shopping spree Summer…I love it! Who is Brodie? I’m know to this site. Enjoy that stick!
Those sticks sound pawsome, Summer! The look in your eyes tells me that they are good stuff. Dexter is a silvervine junkie. I bet he would love them too. Thank you for introducing us to these. 🙂
I have those! Thanks to some cat who put them in my Secret Paws package a few years ago. You’re reminding me that TW hasn’t pulled them out in a long time. I bet she’s chewed them all up herself.
Oh yeah! We like matatabi here, too, Summer!
I’ve never heard of it either but it sounds very interesting!
Eric had no interest whatsoever in catnip, but went crazy for silvervine. Flynn just went crazy for everything!
Admiral had o interest. If I ever see them— And I don’t, I will get one for Katie.
Thank you for sharing this! I had never heard of them..am sure my Lilly will love them!
Those are great sticks, we have a few 🙂
Silvervine we can sometimes get, but we have never seen those sticks! They might be a Pipo treat!
Our mom thinks she has some of those around here. She better find them!
I didn’t know about those sticks – took a while to
pronounce the word. Very good pictures here.
How nice that you get to go shopping for Boodie.
An experienced shopper like yourself would be
sure to get something good for old Boodie.
That looks like something we might like!!!
The Florida Furkids
Woah! My humans NEED to get me that.
Thanks for sharing this nugget of info.
We kittens must get our paw on one or 4 of these!!
I’ll bet those things are really special and from the look on your face they must be!
Summer, we’ve wanted to purchase these silvervine sticks since furrever, but just haven’t done it yet!
That look says it all! We will be shopping for those very soon.
We need to get some of those!
We haven’t heard of these until now. I think I need one.

It’s good to vary your enjoyment, Summer! You are fortunate to love both Matatabi and catnip!
Purrs,
Tama and Genji
Never heard of these sticks – silvervine yes but only in a bag like catnip! WOW – very cool. Mom might get me one or two! I don’t react to nip but silvervine YES.
Hugs, Teddy
Wow. Those look really fun! I need to find some!
My cats have had one experience with silvervine … and it got really ugly. Bear’s our catnip fiend (which is funny, because he didn’t care for it when he was younger!) – but I’d never seen as many whacky paws and hissy p!ssy nonsense as when I brought the silvervine out. Apparently, both of my cats are nasty drunks when it comes to silvervine! We should try it again, just in case that was just a bad day. How does Boodie react to silvervine?
She hasn’t had it yet! But she’s not an aggressive cat, so I’m sure she’s fine with it.
Summer, as usual, useful information. And, as usual, you were on your best behavior while looking awesome!
