When my human got this thing from Amazon, you’d think it was a new cat toy, she was so excited! Well, I guess it is a new toy for her. Let’s back up a bit so you can see what it is.
It’s a new light, and it’s adjustable for both intensity and color balance! I know none of this matters to you, but it does to her. Especially right now, when we are continuing to have a lot of gray, rainy weather for the next couple of weeks. That means we have to shoot inside and will need extra light. But it’s important that the light panel matches the ambient light that’s already in the room. Otherwise, it looks really weird (as you’ll see in a moment).
This is how dark it is without the extra light. My human can add just a bump of light so it doesn’t totally overwhelm the outside light. And she can have the color temperature match or come close to the light coming in through the glass door. That way, I don’t look blue on one side and orange on the other.
Here is what happens when the light panel is mimicking inside (incandescent) light and my human has her camera set for outside light. Looks awful, doesn’t it?
In my next photo, taken at night, the camera was set for inside light to match both the regular light in the living room and the setting on the new light panel.
Totally different, isn’t it? And since the light is only set at about 50% intensity, you can still see some of the living room in the background… and it doesn’t look like a different color from the light on me!
My human can also crank up the light intensity to take faster photos of me playing!
Here I am playing with a new toy a friend of my human’s gave me. My human gave her the green toy I didn’t like for her cat, so she returned the favor and gave her this one because her cat didn’t like it! But maybe that’s for a different blog post.
It’s a small light, but it’s perfect for photographing kitties, and it’s pretty powerful! When my human cranked it up, you can see the background went pretty dark. It’s not perfect — the color temperature range could be even wider, and I don’t think the battery life is that great. (It works when your photo shoots are only 15 or 20 minutes long, like mine are!) But it’s going to be very helpful for both photos and video. If you like to play with photography and are interested in checking it out, you can see it on Amazon.
Also, thanks to Chris, Frankie and Floki’s human for telling us about this company!
