I got an email a couple of days ago from the humans who are holding the Pettie Awards. As you may know, one of the prizes is that the winners from each category get to pick out a shelter to receive a $500 donation. Well, they want all the nominees to have their choice ready for the awards ceremony on September 11… and I don’t have one yet!
The problem I have been having picking out a shelter is that you have to pick one that is listed on the Save-a-Cat (or Save-a-Dog) app on Facebook. And two of my favorite rescues, Winging Cat Rescue and Tabby’s Place are not on the list. My favorite local cat shelter, Kitten Rescue, is on the list, but they just got a big chunk of money from Chase and are holding their big fundraiser, the Fur Ball, this weekend. That’s not to say that they are utterly rolling in dough (they aren’t — no shelter is!), but I know there are shelters and cat rescues out there that have a bigger need for funds right now.
So this is where you come in! I need your help to choose a shelter. If you have a favorite shelter near you, and you know they could use some funds and publicity, check to see if they are listed in the Facebook Save a Cat list (just click on the link — it leads right to the search page. If they are listed, please tell me their name in the comments below, and (briefly!) why you think I should pick them. I will close comments on Wednesday at midnight, Eastern Time, and on my Thursday post, I will list the shelters picked (as long as they are on the Save-a-Cat shelter list) and you all can vote on them! You will have Thursday and Friday to vote, and the shelter with the most votes will get my donation — providing I win, of course! I am really up against some pretty heavy-duty competition in the Best Cat Blog Category and all the competing blogs are first-rate. I am glad I was nominated to begin with! But even if I don’t win, you’ve given your favorite shelter some extra added attention, and that at least is worth something.
So please, tell me about your favorite shelter below!
Oh, and we just remembered the island cats are 2nd in our cat blog likeness list. Sorry we forgot about you Zoey,Wally, and Erney! Plus the Creek cats was 2nd too but we can’t find there blog any more!
Well,it’s between 2 different shelters so we may as well tell you both of my choices I don’t have a FB so they are other people’s choises too. Here they are:Heaven on Earth Society because Django & Satchmo’s reason was PAWSOME!!!! That shelter speaks it’s name!Plus, they need money and they sound so generouse. My 2nd choice was the shelter Harly from Daisy the curly cat’s site because Daisy’s site is a 3 way tied for 2nd favorite cat blog between her’s,Rumblebum, and Angie & Beau Beau’s fur days! P.S. Your site is our favorite Sparkle! We visit almost daily! Just ask our humans!
thank you so much for thinking of us though! wonder how we get on that list?
I was browsing thru some near me here in NY and they had one rather notorious one listed who is now defunct or probably just hiding under yet another name.
We vote for Heaven on Earth Society for Animals because they specialize in “special needs” kittehs including FIV+. The vet bills are crazy high for these special angels and they’re also hoping to get enough money to purchase their property and expand their iso space so they can help other rescues who don’t have iso space, take the remaining kitties at the end of the big Best Friends adoption events. No one ever wants to see kitties go back on those trucks to the city shelters at the end of the day!
It’s their 10th Anniversary and what a wonderful way to celebrate and expand to help more kittehs in the future!
Sorry, neither Mom nor I are on FB so we cannot see the list. Any way you can publish it, or create a link to it, that doesn’t require being on Facebook?
This is so cool that you are doing this, Sparkle – it’ll be great when you win! We’d like to suggest Animal Rescuers Without Borders. They help dogs and cats in Baja and Mexico as well as Southern CA.
We have our paws crossed for you!

You are a real sweetheart!…Happy Labor Day, lovely friends…xoxo…Calle, Halle, Sukki
Oh, we almost forgot – the Norfolk shelter is a no-kill shelter, too.
Ok, we have to purrsonally say that none of us kitties came from this shelter, but our Mom has had wonderful experiences with this shelter as she helped her friends & their animals – it’s in Virginia (she even supports them after we moved out of the state!) & is called Norfolk Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Norfolk, VA 23504). Not only do they have a great adoption service, but they also provide discounted veterinary services (not just spay/neuter either – a whole range of vet services) to pet owners in an effort to help keep animals healthy! Here is their website: http://norfolkspca.com
We hope you win – Yay!!

We couldn’t find one near us so we would go with the one where Harley came from too.
Hi Sparkle. Mommy doesn’t have a facebook thingie and neither do we. Purrhaps we need to get one! We just wanted to say thanks for visiting uSSSSS!!!
Crud. We couldn’t look cuz our Mom doesn’t do FB…We know, she’s a complete putz. But Sparkle, we trust you to chose wisely WHEN you win!
We chose Marley Fund! Marley fund is wonderful, they rescue and adopt out FIV and FeLV+ cats. We love Marley Fund and Maggie and Saylor are in their upcoming calendar!
♥ Maggie May and the Creek Cats
We tried finding a shelter we’re familiar with and didn’t see any on the list. We do like the Furkids suggestion of Cat’s Exclusive since that’s where Harley came from!
I’m not very familiar with the rescue shelters (and I should be ashamed), but I know you will pick the best. Good luck on the award.
We tried searching for our favorite shelter and it wasn’t there…or at least it didn’t come up when we searched. We know you will pick the purrfect shelter, Sparkle! (And we hope you win the Pettie!)
Mom just looked again and the Shelter that Harley (Daisy’s brother) came from is on the list. It’s Cats Exclusive in Margate FL. Mom knows they will be getting some help from the big cat show in October (she’s going to be a vendor), but they do great work. You could ask Daisy’s Mom if they’ve recently gotten any big donations.

Sparkle, Those rescues on the list of Facebook Save a Cat, is not very large. There are so many shelters that need help. Wonder how we can get a shelter on the list??? If we have to pick one on the list, I will pick Holly’s Place Animal Rescue. It just looks like a great rescue and it sure has a nice web page which sounds silly but I feel like that is important to get people interested in adopting animals. They also have great pictures and lots of description of the animals up for adoption. Thanks so much for doing this.
Facebook wouldn’t let me look, it said the applicaiton or page was restricted. Oh well, you will figure it out, you’re really smart!
That’s a short list if we found the right one. We are not familiar with any of them, so we vote for the “no-kill” one.
How cool! We’ll go take a look at the list………
I don’t know a shelter to recommend but kudos to you for doing such a good deed, Sparkle! You’re more than just a pretty face (=^..^=)
