Caturday Catnip Harvest

July 16, 2016 By: Summer Samba42 Comments

I was out back, checking up on my catnip plants and it was amazing!

Look at how overgrown it has gotten! A catnip harvest was long overdue.

Some of the catnip was in full bloom — a lovely time to harvest it. Some of it was past the flowering stage. Some shoots were still young. It was kind of a mess… but I didn’t care! I just wanted to whiff.

But it was time to get to work and supervise my human as she cut back the catnip. It’s a very important job, and I needed to make sure she didn’t mess it up.

Plus her hand smelled heavenly when she was finished.

So I had a taste… I mean, how could I resist?

Look at all the catnip we harvested! My human actually read up on how to dry it so she could do it in a way that would best preserve the potent oils. So now the bunches are tied together and hanging in a dark corner of the half bath in the enclosed patio. And there’s still enough nip in the planter if I want to have it fresh!

Ours looked much the same, but to our horror – the man-person threw the trimmings into the COMPOST PILE! Grrrr….

Oh my mouses, Summer. I am SOOOOO jealous. As you know, my peep is a total failure on the nip-growin’ front. As if the two (formerly three) half-dead grown-up plants weren’t bad enough, the babies she started are disappearin’, one by one. I’m pretty sure Tobias is to blame for that. Her paws are small enough to fit through the netting and every day, there are fewer babies left than there were the day before. MOUSES!

That is a great harvest, Summer! Ours are big like that and the flowers are SWARMING with bees. In fact, TBT says he needs to cut a couple plants short cuz they are flopping all over the path from the deck and he dares not disturb so many bees at once. We just ignore them without problems, but then we are down at ground level.

What an amazing harvest, Summer. Mom doesn’t know what happened to our nip. It was healthy and beautiful one day and dead the next! We are not happy campers. Guess there is always next year! XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
