I know it’s kind of late in the semester to go back to school, but yesterday was the earliest slot available for a therapy cat visit. Coming down to USC as a therapy pet to mingle with the students is very popular! But I’m glad I went when I did — the weather was pleasant, not too hot, although my human could still wear short sleeves.
One or two students remembered me from last time, but there were lots of new ones. And older people too, since it was Parents Week on the campus. So many people wanted to pet me, and I even gave out a High Five or two! Which was pretty amazing, since I’m not used to doing outdoor visits. My human brought some extra-special treats as a reward for being outside. She also made sure I was comfortable at all times. She almost always had a hand on me, just to let me know she was there for me. It must have worked, because several humans remarked about how calm I was.
Because I’m not used to the outdoor visits, my human plans to set up more so I get accustomed to them. Being a therapy cat involves walking the line between knowing when situations are too stressful for me, or if I just need to adjust. Usually in my case, it’s the latter. I really did enjoy visiting with the students.
And guess what? The student helping out with the therapy pets told us that when I visited last year, over 100 more students stopped by, and they stayed longer! So I was a big hit. Yes, definitely, I’ll be back.
