Many of you humans remember that great aunt from childhood who sent you a boring shirt for the holidays instead of something fun like the latest cool toy. Well, this is your chance to be the Aunt Agnes in your (or someone else’s) cat’s life. Here’s a list of Christmas gifts that no cat is likely to enjoy.
Even though your cat will be sorely disappointed if you actually get any of these, I’ve included links to Amazon anyway. If you click them and make a purchase (hopefully for something more fun than what I’ve linked to), I will get a small commission. Thanks for your support!
- Nail Clippers
Cats’ opinions on nail clippers range from indifference to your are taking your life in your hands if you try to use one on them. This is close to the top of any cats’ most unwanted list, only outdone by a…
- Digital Thermometer
Even I hate having my temperature taken. That said, I will add that my human always keeps one in the house especially for me, just in case it’s needed. Fortunately, I don’t think that’s ever happened… or if it has, I’ve blocked it out of my mind.
- Toothbrush
Dental health is very important, and I actually get mine brushed pretty often! But is a toothbrush an appropriate holiday gift for a cat? Well… how would YOU like getting one under the tree?
- New Litter Box
Technically, you are supposed to switch out a plastic litter box every 6 months, especially if it gets a lot of traffic. But is it appropriate for a Christmas gift? Not really.
- Cat Litter Mat
Honestly, we don’t care about how much we scatter litter any more than you cared about having a new shirt as a kid. Humans who give their cats a litter mat are really just getting it for themselves.
- New Cat Carrier
This is a gift that will almost guarantee your cat will run and hide as soon as it’s opened. (Unless you are me — I’ll be totally excited for a new adventure!) Even better, this deluxe model is TSA approved. Imagine your cat’s face when they realize they could go on a plane in this.
- Gift Certificate for a Veterinary Check Up
Aunt Agnes will decidedly be persona non grata after giving this stocking stuffer.
- Clothes
Okay, I would for sure be thrilled if I got new clothes as a holiday gift. But I’m not your cat. And your cat will definitely not appreciate it. And even I draw the line at ugly sweaters.
I hope you got some great gifts ideas to NOT give your cats this Christmas! If you can think of any others, let me know in the comments.

Dear Summer, my Momma just ordered a pack of them toothbrushes. I better get something good to nom in my stocking, that’s all I gotta say. Love, Dori
It seems pretty obvious that none of these items would be considered
a great gift by a cat. Cats want toys and treats. Maybe a new really nice
bed.
Mol Summer in the olden days I got a toothbrush, oranges, socks and maybe a small toy in my stocking. Oh yeah and Fanny Farmer Chocolate balls. That’s an old candy store long gone
You’re right, Summer. Those are still good things to get for your cat, but they would not be well-received as “gifts.”
Growing up, my sister and I *always* got a new toothbrush in our stockings on Christmas morning. LOL!!
Mee-yow Summer that iss a fien lsit!
Can wee add weerd shaped bowlss that are two small to eat or drink outta propurrley….
Now THE new wheelss are kewl butt it shuud bee 1/2 covurred at THE back fore Purrivacy me Peecefullness mee thinkss.
Mew mew mew BellaDharma an ((hugss)) BellaSita Mum
You’re right Summer ! Even though they aren’t fun sometimes you NEED new clothes !
You are right, no cats want these things. 🙂
These are all nightmare gifts, Summer!!!
I wouldn’t want any of these…though that carrier is kinda cool.
MOL none of those gifts sound good to us. We have that same green sweater!
These are great. My human is eyeballing that prisoner transport unit. MOL!
I loved this. Several we all need to have around. That cat carrier…no. I would never want to use that for Katie. Right now she is fine with the one she has had since she was adopted. That thing is hideous.
You are right. No cats would want to see those “gifts”.
You are right Summer!
I do not like any of those gifts!!!
Purrs, Julie
I would definitely skip the toothbrush as I value my hands.
We cracked up about those “gifts”. What we want is treats. We are almost drowneded in toys, beds, and Nip. Costumes seem horrible. And we have 4 litterboxes in the basement, so no room fer more.
