Outsmarting CatsBy Wendy Christensen
I actually have a previous version of this book from a few years back called Outwitting Cats, but I never reviewed it because I was concerned that it gave away too much, and that too many feline secrets were being revealed. But a couple of months ago, when this book came out, I decided to rethink my position, especially once I realized that most of this “outsmarting” required effort mainly on the humans’ behalf and little to no effort from us cats. Which is as it should be, since much of feline “misbehavior” originates with something the human is doing wrong. If our litter box is sitting behind speakers that blare heavy metal music all day, if we are tearing up furniture and attacking ankles, if a new cat is brought into the home and left in the middle of the living room with no proper introduction, why are we to blame when things go wrong? We didn’t create those situations! This book explains cat behavior and cat language — and what humans must do to establish good relationships with us cats. The chapter on quirks is especially helpful for those who are bringing home a rescue cat whose previous humans messed her up in the head. Whether your cat is rejecting his litter box, suddenly attacking her former feline friend, or ripping up the toilet paper — and eating it — humans will find answers here, and for many other dilemmas too. Best of all, we kitties don’t have to do anything but be ourselves. In fact, I kind of think this book should be called Outsmarting Humans, because once yours has read it, she will be so much more pleasant to live with.
