Cat Care

Let's face it - cats don't come with an instruction manual and sometimes you need help figuring out what we need. These web sites and articles will offer information and advice, whether you've got a kitten, an older cat, or just a temperamental cat that needs to have its claws trimmed.

About Cats
I hate large mounds of pop up ads as much as the next cat, but they're not Franny Syufy's fault. She has one of the most comprehensive cat sites on the web, so you absolutely must visit. Anything you want to know about cats - caring for them, choosing a kitten, behavioral and health issues, advocacy and much more - is here.
Kittencare.com
All your questions about cat health and cat care are answered here - seriously! Look over this list and see if your question isn't there... and if it isn't, you can always email and ask.
Pet Prospects Cat Library
Here's another site that's loaded with articles on all aspects of cat care.
Plants and Your Cat
Either bookmark this page or print it out - it's a list of plants that are poisonous to us cats. It's a very long list, so don't even try to memorize it. Keep it somewhere handy. And don't bring any of these plants home, because we're sure to munch on them!
Cat Diseases and Organ Systems
This section of PetEducation.com is a comprehensive library of articles about our bodies, organs, systems and the ailments we can get. You'll have a better understanding of what's going on with us the next time we need a trip to the vet.
Make Grooming Quick and Simple
Here's an article about all aspects of grooming, from brushing and nail clipping to bathing (ugh). Incidentally, I hate being restrained, as do both Binga and Boodie, so my human waits until we're having our afternoon naps to clips our nails - we're sleepy, happy and pliable. We think she's just petting and playing with us and we don't realize she's trimming our claws until she's almost done.
Introducing a Kitten to an Older Pet
This article explains how to introduce a kitten into a situation where there is already an older pet. Come to think of it, my human did just about all the things mentioned here! I didn't get my own scratching post, though - I was cheated!
Kitten Rescue - Kitten Care Handbook
Whether you've rescued a kitten, or acquired it through a breeder or a friend's litter, you'll find lots of tips on how to care for it. Included is information on caring for very young and orphaned kittens.
The Special Needs of the Senior Cat
This is an excellent article on older cats - what to expect, how to care for them, keeping the older cat healthy. Binga, Boodie and I were all born within a two-year period - that means my human's going to eventually have three cranky old cats at the same time... heh, heh, heh.
Circle of Healing Purrs
If your cat is sick, and you and the vet have done all you can, you can add a little extra healing with the help of this Reiki site. Feel dubious about spiritual healing? Research has shown that positive thought and prayers do have an effect on a sick person's well-being. Why should cats be any different?
Chip Your Cat
A page about chip identification. Although it's from a Netherlands site, there are many other countries where chipping your pet is a common practice. Chipping is a very good thing!
Cats and Claws
This article explains why declawing a cat is a bad idea, and offers some suggestions on how to deal with scratching. I really feel sorry for you humans - you really have no idea how good it feels to scratch! My dream house would have several big, carpeted cat trees in every room.
