I got to go on a therapy visit Sunday! Originally, I wasn’t doing anything this weekend, but my human thought I was bored because of the heat wave, so she set one up. The other team was a new one I hadn’t met before. It was a nice human and her smallish Saint Bernard, Clementine. By smallish, I mean 120 pounds… which is about what my human weighs! But for a Saint Bernard, that isn’t very big. Clementine lives with three Persian kitties, so she liked me.
I got busy dropping in on patients right away! People wanted to spend lots of time with me, and I was happy to stretch out next to them and purr. Several of the patients had cats of their own, at home, or in the past, so I got to hear about them. But I have to say, my favorite visit was with a lady who wasn’t sure she wanted to see me at first. But then she decided she did, and I got to hang out on the bed with her for a while. My human told the lady that I do tricks and we showed her my High Five. She wanted to know if I could give her a high five… so I did! We had a very fun visit. She said that she liked dogs more, but that I was different.*
“She’s not your regular cat,” my human told her.
Actually, the funny thing is that, in a lot of ways, I am a regular cat! It’s just that people who are not around cats much make assumptions that aren’t true. I’m like lots of other cats, but I’m also a public cat. That’s the only way I’m not regular. Other than that, I do a lot of the same things Binga and Boodie do — hang out with the humans, entertain them, get in trouble, etc.
The funniest thing about this particular visit? This was the lady’s second time at the hospital. She had been there a few months before, and she said some woman had come around with a cat and she turned down the visit. Well, she did not remember, but that was my human and me! ‘Cause at the time we were the only therapy cat team. In fact, the other therapy cat team has a male human, so you can’t mix us up. This time, even though she had her doubts, she accepted our visit, and she was happy she did! This is why my human always tries to spend a little time chatting with humans who aren’t sure they want a visit from me. Sometimes they change their mind — and they are pleasantly surprised!
* Sometimes people say the same thing about Binga.
