We cats are fortunate in that we’re never required to multitask and honestly, focusing on one thing at a time really leads to the best results. Humans, on the other hand, spend most of their time multitasking, which is why mediocrity is so prevalent and true achievement is so rare in the human world. Multitasking is bad — but then there’s multi-catting, which is very good, if a human knows what he or she is doing. This book is a great instruction manual for humans living with multiple cats, whether that means 3 or 13. The more cats that live together, the more complex the dynamics are, and there is lots of wise advice here about issues that are bound to come up — battles for dominance, in-fighting, meal jockeying, disaster preparedness and the ever-unpopular litter box issues. The author spends a lot of time and several chapters addressing the latter — multi cats means the potential of “improper elimination” is multiplied too, and it’s far better to start off on the right paw and have damage control plans in advance than to have to figure it out later. My favorite chapter is the one about preparing for emergencies — hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, etc. — that might require humans and their cats to evacuate in a hurry. Humans are famously bad at thinking things through in advance, so everything they need to know in case of emergency is clearly explained. If you have a lot of kitty company, you’ll want to make sure your human gives this book a thorough read through.
